No long introductory paragraphs for this one. It gives me great pleasure to sit in my haunted house today and give you the latest from Nova Scotia Paranormal Events:
A couple of these were briefly mentioned on the blog
before, but the last two are brand new.
Roads in
Nova Scotia on Which You Are Most Likely to See an Actual Ghost:
#1:
Location: Kelly’s Mountain on the TransCanada Highway 105 in
Cape Breton (Victoria County).
The Ghost in
Question: A former resident of
this exact location, who is quite unhappy that his land now has a highway
running through it.
The Details: If the 180° hairpin turn at the foot of the eastern
side of Kelly’s Mountain isn’t enough to scare you, the ghost of the old man
that haunts this scenic route just might. Several drivers have reported seeing
him standing IN the road and also sitting along the roadside, shaking his fist
angrily at those who dare drive upon what used to be his land long ago before
the highway was built. This dude is seriously holding a grudge.
I cannot attest to
how common it is to see the Disgruntled Ghost of Kelly’s Mountain but I
personally know one person who has encountered him and the late great Bill
Jessome, (the maritime paranormal researcher extraordinaire) had been told of
the ghost enough times that he felt it worthy to investigate and report on it on
the old Maritime Mysteries show way
back in the 90’s.
To my knowledge, and
not for lack of trying, the identity of this bitter old man has never been
established. Perhaps local Cape Bretoners know who he is/was and if anyone can
put a name to the ghost, please let me know. If you’ve seen an irate older
individual hanging out in the road on Kelly’s Mountain, you’ve probably seen a
ghost, whether you want to admit it or not.
#2:
Location: Route 318 between Dartmouth and Waverley (Halifax County).
The Ghost in Question: “Joe”, the phantom truck driver.
The Details: Joe (his real name) has been pulling his big rig over and picking up
unsuspecting hitchhikers in his old eighteen-wheeler along this twisty,
nausea-inducing road ever since he was killed in an accident along this stretch
some 50 years ago.
Like the Mr. Crankypants ghost of Kelly’s
Mountain, Joe appears solid and not very ethereal (as does his truck). He
engages his passengers in conversation and has been known to give his full
name. I have not been able to ascertain his last name. However, I’d settle for
knowing which kind of truck he drove just so I could be on the lookout.
Indeed it sounds like an R.L Stine "Goosebumps" novel but I assure you it is
far from fiction.
#3:
Location: Highway 236 from Truro to the community
of Old Barns (Colchester County).
The
Ghost in Question: A young female, transparent in
appearance, who walks along the road by the dykes carrying her head. You read
that right: her head.
The
Details: Her story
is sad and gruesome: many years ago she unhappily worked in a local tavern
owned by her father. She became friendly with some of the sailors who would
frequent the pub. They convinced her to show them where her father kept his
cash stash, in exchange for promising to take her away from there. They filled
their pockets and ran, with the young girl on their heels. Long story short,
they decapitated her and fled with the cash.
Her ghost
has sometimes been seen along the road to the tavern with her head tucked under
her arm. Very trustworthy witnesses in the area have reported seeing the tragic
apparition at night and some of the locals try to avoid the area after sundown.
#4:
Location: The Old Branch Road, just off Highway 125, in
North Sydney (Cape Breton county).
The
Ghosts in Question: A couple travelling on this road had car trouble and became lost and
froze to death in the dead of winter in the 1970’s.
The
Details: No sightings of apparitions have been publicly
reported (to my knowledge) but some creepy stuff has occurred here so it’s
worth mentioning when discussing spooky roads.
Following
the pair’s hypothermia-induced deaths, people have reported a feeling of being watched
in that area, vehicles mysteriously turn off for no reason, and more than one
person has taken their own life in the woods near one particular tree, which is
surrounded only by other dead trees and plants. Coincidentally, the road is
across the street from Lakeside cemetery but that isn’t pertinent to the
paranormal activity often reported on the road and throughout the woods there.
I am of the opinion that not
enough people are coming forward in any public capacity when they encounter a roadside
ghost. They might mention it to a friend or relative but they aren’t really
keen on the general public finding out about it.
Maybe you’re one of those
individuals who can attest to a particular Nova Scotia road that is definitely
haunted. Maybe you’ve picked up a weird hitchhiker only to have him/her vanish
before your very eyes in the rearview mirror. Maybe you’ve personally seen wispy spirits floating down dusty backwoods roads.
Please let me know if this has
happened to you.
It has not happened to me, but
there’s always hope for the future.
