LOCALLY HAUNTED: CEMETERIES, HOSPITALS AND CHURCHES

As you probably know, just about any location or building can become haunted. Of course, we (living people) do not really know the “rules” of being dead but it seems like spirits hang around just about anywhere they feel like, including hospitals, churches and of course, cemeteries (seems cliché but it’s true), just to name a few.

Leave it to us to dig up the dirt on a few of these places in Nova Scotia.

Halifax Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
This was the first cemetery in Halifax, NS, established in 1749. There are approximately 1,300 gravestones but allegedly at least 12,000 bodies were buried there over time. Creepily enough, it contains some unusual headstones, some with skulls and crossbones; the earliest ones were hand carved from slate, ironstone and sandstone. The poor and victims of epidemics did not receive headstones. The last burials at this location were in 1844. If you’ve never been there, it is a great place to roam around, right in the heart of the city. I recommend when the sun is setting to give it the proper ambiance.

The ghost of a young man named James has been heard on more than one occasion, talking and laughing at whoever is within earshot. He was murdered by a Halifax shopkeeper after being tormented and bullied by James way back in the day. People say he snickers and his ghostly voice drifts among the tombstones still. He may be trying to get your attention so listen quietly, should you venture in there.

Catherine McIntosh's grave (Pictou County, Nova Scotia)
The grave of eight year old Catherine, who died in 1882, in Pictou County, NS is believed by many to be haunted, and for good reason. She originally was buried in a local cemetery but was later moved to an isolated location down a dirt road, which lied in close proximity to her family’s farm/home. (There has been more than one story in the paranormal world of a spirit expressing its dislike of having its remains moved to a different location).Based on the alleged weirdness experienced at her burial site, many have gone to check it out and then reported they clearly heard voices (EVP’s have been captured) and growling, and had feelings of being touched or pushed. Reports of actually seeing the child’s ghost at the gravesite have also occurred.

New Glasgow Aberdeen Hospital (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia):
This hospital has been in existence since 1895. The ghost of a little girl dressed in white hangs around the 5th floor, sighted by many over the years.

The Victoria General hospital (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
The ghost of a nun dressed in grey roaming the halls has been seen by people in one of Halifax, Nova Scotia’s main hospitals. Allegedly, she survived the Halifax Explosion and then came to work at the VG during WWI. Her spirit is said to comfort the dying during their final moments in the hospital. A soft grey light and the faint smell of incense accompanies her.

Side note: Just a few years ago, my husband and I were at the VG hospital and saw a very old nurse dressed in a very old nursing uniform; the type that was popular maybe in the thirties or forties. She was either fashionably stuck in one of those eras, or she was stuck in this life/dimension after her number was up. Something was totally off about her. I am not calling “ghost”, but her age was a dead giveaway, no pun intended. Not many nurses work into their 70’s, or later. (Upon finding out about the nun ghost at the VG, I considered whether the old nurse and the nun ghost are one entity. But the old nurse did fill out paperwork and I am not convinced a ghost would do that, but who knows…)

(Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, identifying church names for the following have been withheld)

Dartmouth, NS: At this particular parish, the ghost of a young murdered female has been spotted inside the church.

Halifax, NS: An old Halifax church has a ghost frequenting their congregation. The organ has been known to play “by itself” without human intervention, and the spectre in question has been seen kneeling in the pews but disappears when approached.

Waddens Cove, NS: A country church in Cape Breton is home to a dead priest who tries to talk to whoever is around.

The next time you are in church (ahem…) or heaven forbid, a hospital or cemetery, have a look at those around you. If you get the feeling something is not quite right, it probably isn’t.
