CRYPTID CREATURE SIGHTINGS

Pretty much everyone has been for a walk in a wooded or remote area at some point in their life. And I am willing to bet that at least a few of you have heard branches cracking, bushes rustling, and heard other movement nearby while you were on your innocent hike.

You maybe have even thought, “That’s a bear!” or “Probably a deer or raccoon” but I am about to introduce you to several people, all from Nova Scotia, who wished what they saw WAS a bear or deer or raccoon.

As it turns out, what they witnessed was a type of “cryptid”.

A cryptid is simply an animal whose existence is disputed or unsubstantiated. Two examples of cryptids that were proven to eventually be real are the platypus and the giant squid.

Examples of cryptids who still remain elusive and not scientifically proven (yet) are the very-famous Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, just to name a couple.

Cryptozoology is a real field of study dedicated to proving the existence of seldom-seen, but all too real creatures.

With an open mind, the following are true accounts of what has been spotted in Nova Scotia’s woods for many years:

Morden, Nova Scotia is a little community in Kings County, right on the coast of the Bay of Fundy. Three young friends were exploring along the shore one summer day in 2003 and losing track of time when they saw the sun was about to set and decided to head for home. As they headed towards the woods they would have to walk through to go home, one of them felt a sense of being watched. Then noises in the tree branches were heard and a creepy feeling set in. More sounds came from the trees, like something moving swiftly through the treetops as the three made their way through the forest. Peering through the tree branches, one of the trio of friends finally spotted what was causing the commotion.

He could see a dark green creature with humanoid features. It had arms with webbed and clawed hands, two legs, two feet, and was about 4 feet tall with a thin body. It was staring at them with an intense hatred. The girl in the group of friends spotted it and began to run, at which point the creature jumped to a closer tree. The three of them took off running and soon came upon a field, leaving the dense forest behind. The green cryptid let loose with a high pitch scream from its perch in the treetops. Startled birds fled throughout the sky.

The kids made it home safely and after some amateur sleuthing with another friend, they discovered the thing they saw was identical to another creature seen in Dover, Massachusetts back in the 1970’s.

In April 1969, police were called in to Berwick, Nova Scotia to control the bumper to bumper traffic created from the reported sightings of an “eighteen foot tall creature”, dubbed “The Phantom” and was reported on the evening news. It was seen by many residents and described as a tall dark form, estimated to be moving at about 20 mph.

Lastly, this one may surprise you the most: Cryptid animals very much resembling kangaroos have been seen by many people in places throughout North America where kangaroos do not live. Lucky for us, this has of course happened in Nova Scotia, too.

In 1984 in Bridgetown, NS, a man reported seeing such a creature (…”two and a half feet tall, with short front paws, tight to the body, with large back legs and a deer-like head.”)

There have also been sightings reported as recently as 2015 near Antigonish, NS.

When I was a kid growing up in Lunenburg County, people laughed at a local man who also reported seeing something like this kangaroo-creature (in the 1970’s). Years later, my son and I spotted something similar in the same area that definitely had back legs resembling a kangaroo.(approx. 2005) We couldn’t believe what we were seeing. But there it was.

Other places this creature has been spotted include Guysborough and Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

There is weird stuff out there. Right in your backyard.

Maybe you’ve seen some of the cryptids described here. If not, maybe someday you will.

There are likely many more out there that we have yet to discover.

Between 15,000-18,000 new species are scientifically discovered and classified every year. Granted, half of those are insects (like we need more of those). Regardless, it is not much of a stretch to surmise that there are creatures out there still unidentified and once in a while a human encounters one. Just because they aren’t what you typically expect to see, doesn’t mean the eye-witness isn’t believable. It was hard for people to believe in the tremendously-large giant squid but it has now been proven to exist.
