SPIRIT VOICES (EVPs)

Unless you follow the paranormal circuit, you may not know what EVPs are.

The acronym stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or simply: unexplained voices captured on recording devices, believed to be from disembodied sources.

You know….the voices of the dead.

Can it actually happen?

Well, hearing voices in empty rooms in an otherwise quiet and haunted house is pretty good proof that when a ghost is hanging around it can also speak. This has been evident over the years in our house, featured in our blog. Here are links to a few instances:

EVPs are the actual capturing of these voices on recording devices with mics (video cameras, cassette or micro tape recorders, baby monitors, etc).

Many times people do not even realize they have captured an EVP until they edit and enhance their audio recordings. It is then often discovered that a spirit had spoken, even though it was not audible during the time of recording. This is very common during paranormal recordings.

Why can’t a ghost just talk to us, like we might talk to them, and say what needs to be said out loud?

Sometimes they do (as I said above) and sometimes they don’t.

I suppose one reasonable explanation could be that experts are pretty sure it takes a lot of energy for a spirit to materialize. What gives it that energy? Possibly water, electrical currents and things like that but that is hearsay and unproven really. (The answer could be something not in our realm of consciousness or understanding so it is difficult to speculate.) Regardless, if it takes substantial effort for a soul to materialize on our earth, it stands to reason it requires even more energy for them to do their ghosty things, like move objects, open doors, throw things or even speak. They don’t exactly have the vocal chords or lung function anymore, like we do, so they have to produce vocal sounds in some other way.

In other words, it may be hard to do. You have to consider that it may be difficult for spirits to orally communicate between “two realms”. This explains why their recorded words can be very muffled. They are likely standing on the cusp of the afterlife and you are in this one, which may result in barriers. Imagine if you tried to yell something so that a spirit in the afterlife would be able to hear it. Doesn’t sound all that easy, does it?

But obviously ghosts can do it sometimes. As I said above, several people in our family HAVE heard ghost voices, including myself. And there are endless reports of authentic ghost voices all around the world, occurring under different circumstances. It is quite common, actually.

Here are a few from around Nova Scotia:

This was recorded at an undisclosed location in Halifax, NS by a paranormal investigations team. What’s intriguing about this EVP is that the female spirit speaks a whole sentence, compared to a lot of recordings where you only get two or three words usually.

Warning: It is super-creepy. Remember, this is the actual voice of a spirit.

In this next video, while a recording was not made of a voice, a former “ghost-tour” guide describes hearing a real ghost voice at Sydney’s oldest and very haunted house/museum in Cape Breton. It’s a 10 minute video but if you just want to hear about the voice, start at the 3:55 mark.

Our personal experience with an EVP:
We live directly across the road from a small lake, just outside Halifax, NS. I believe it was back in the 1800’s that two young couples were boating there, when the boat capsized and one of the young ladies drowned. Her name was Mary Lawrence. We came across a published account of the incident some years back. Mary’s ghost was seen under the water by a girl who swam there one summer day and incidentally, knew nothing of the drowning. She swore she saw a woman under the water and never swam there again. Naturally, we assume that was Mary.
Some years later, my husband decided he was going over to the lake with a tape recorder and invite Mary to say a few words. I declined to tag along. I already have one haunted house; it would be nice if our house across from the lake could remain ghost-free. I did not need Mary traipsing up my driveway and taking up residence in my attic.

Just stay in the lake, dammit.

Anyway, my husband came back after awhile and we listened to the tape he recorded while on the more wooded side of the lake. There was not much ambient noise, aside from the odd car driving by on the road. No one else was near the lake that evening.

Did we capture Mary’s voice from the depths of the lake where she lost her life? Nope.

But you can imagine our surprise when a MAN’s deep voice said a few words into the tape recorder! And no, it wasn’t my husband. We have played the tape countless times but can’t figure out what the man is saying.

Hopefully, whoever it was, either stayed at the lake or moved on. I really hope those were squirrels I heard in my attic not too long afterwards.
