APPARITIONS AT THE TIME OF DEATH

Ghosts and spirits have materialized before a vast number of people.

Although some reports ballpark it in the range of 60% of people, accurate statistics are not obtainable as not everyone reports their experience and of the ones who do, it cannot be conclusively determined that what they saw was definitely a ghost. Those of us lucky enough to experience them know that they can drift throughout haunted locations or just appear out of nowhere in a random place.

The type of apparitions we are about to discuss differ slightly from your average, everyday ghost.
These are apparitions or spirits seen very close to the time of death.

A crisis apparition is characterized by seeing a person’s spirit in a different location at the exact time of their sudden, tragic death.

The living person experiencing this phenomenon is not aware the death has happened but suddenly the deceased appears. (For example, a tragic accident has killed your friend; you have no idea anything happened to her yet, but she suddenly appears in your kitchen.)

On occasion, a crisis apparition has been witnessed during times of extreme injury or trauma to the victim without death occurring.

The crisis apparition usually does not linger for very long (a few seconds to a few minutes) and may or may not interact with the living.

It differs from a traditional “forerunner”, which commonly presents itself as a warning sign that the death of a loved one is imminent, and therefore will always precede the actual death by minutes, days or even weeks. Also, a forerunner rarely, if ever, denotes who will die, whereas a crisis apparition shows the deceased clearly.

Why do crisis apparitions occur?
Paranormal researchers propose that immediately before the impact of a violent or painful death, the soul releases from the body, so this is a possible explanation. Why does it decide to come see you? One can only guess-----to inform you? To summon help? It’s in a state of shock?

We cannot know the answer.

Apparitions Immediately Following a Death

Additionally, there have been many reports of people seeing a loved one’s spirit/apparition shortly after their death has occurred. This occurs in moments after the death. I am not referring to a ghost you may encounter several weeks, months or years down the road.

In these types of sightings, the living person is usually aware the death has occurred.

For example, your grandmother dies in the hospital. The family has let you know and a half hour later, you see your Gammy sitting in her favorite chair in the living room, smiling at you.

These apparitions are usually a one-time occurrence and seem to serve a purpose as outlined below. They differ from common “ghost sightings” which may occur repeatedly (i.e. as in a haunted location).

The apparitions immediately following a death generally fall into two categories:

1) The deceased appears somewhere familiar and significant “one more time” before venturing on to the afterlife, and usually do not interact with people, although some report the spirit said goodbye or other brief message.

This can happen anywhere that was important to the deceased; their home, your home, workplace or other venue they spent a lot of time at. People that have witnessed this claim the spirit looks very real, not ethereal in any way and seems to be just passing through.

I am reminded of an example of this type of apparition sighting, which happened to a relative, here in Nova Scotia:

2) The deceased appear before a grieving loved one to offer support.

In this instance they are trying to comfort those they are visiting and to let them know they are happy, at peace, and well again. Sometimes they speak, saying a few significant words; other times they just appear or can reach out and touch the living person.

Researchers have found these apparitions appear suddenly and almost always to only one person at a time. (They don’t like crowds.) They can take on the appearance of a younger chronological age, if they were elderly when they died, but that is not always the case.

A great example of this is the true story of Bill, who lived somewhere in the U.S. He was an elderly man with a large family; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He died rather suddenly one day. He then appeared to his startled daughter in the middle of the night, told her he was doing fine and to get a pen and some paper. He dictated a beautiful letter, dedicated to his wife for her upcoming birthday and insisted his daughter present it to her with her other birthday gifts at the party they had planned. The wife was flabbergasted as the daughter explained the letter dictated by the deceased. The wife knew it was genuine, as in the letter he called her by his secret pet name for her, which no one else knew. True story.

Most people do not get to experience such a lengthy, specific interaction with a spirit. They were lucky.

As with all paranormal topics, this one brings forth many questions.

Why doesn’t this happen for everyone when they die?

Why only certain people?

You may ask yourself, “Why her, and not me?” (Or “I’m glad it was her and not me!”)

There are no hard and fast rules in regards to any of this and these types of experiences are subject to change (at the discretion of the spirit). Pretty sure they can just do what they want so it is hard to keep track. No one on earth is a true expert on apparitions or the afterlife. We can only gauge their authenticity and the rules the deceased “live” by based on our own experiences, which luckily are common.

Remember, we aren’t meant to know everything.
